Recipient of seven Spur Awards, Elmer Kelton "just keeps getting better and better" (Tulsa World). When a ruthless cattle baron and his men destroy Doug Monahan's property, his old friend and mentor is gunned down. Pistol whipped and now flat broke, Monahan finds refuge on the sprawling homestead of Noah Wheeler and his virtuous daughter. But Monahan refuses to quit. "If there's an heir to the Louis L'Amour legacy, it's Kelton."-Booklist

Ken Marks's narration perfectly matches Kelton's traditional Western story. Doug Monahan runs a fencing crew near Twin Wells, Texas. Fences protect ranchers' property from wandering stock, rustlers, and wildlife. Marks's straightforward reading style and slow pace work well with the plot of the range war between open-range ranchers and those wanting fences. Marks's delivery is especially effective in delivering distinctive male voices and plausible female ones. Marks's tones are light and conversational, although he delivers quiet passion when necessary. A bit of romance and a sentimental ending add to the warm feelings as good once again triumphs over evil. S.C.A. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
