"Putney's endearing characters and warm-hearted stories never fail to inspire and delight." -Sabrina Jeffries A ROGUE REDEEMED As Washington burns, Callista Brooke is trapped in the battle between her native England and her adopted homeland. She is on the verge of losing everything, including her life, when a handsome Englishman cuts through the violent crowd to claim that she is his. Callie falls into her protector's arms, recognizing that he is no stranger, but the boy she'd once loved, a lifetime ago. Lord George Gordon Audley had been Callie's best friend, and it was to Gordon she turned in desperation to avoid a loathsome arranged marriage. But the repercussions of his gallant attempt to rescue her sent Callie packing to Jamaica, and Gordon on a one way trip to the penal colony of Australia. Against all odds, Gordon survived. Finding Callie is like reclaiming his tarnished soul, and once again he vows to do whatever is necessary to protect her and those she loves. But the innocent friendship they shared as children has become a dangerous passion that may save or destroy them when they challenge the aristocratic society that exiled them both. Putney continues her Regency-era Rogues Redeemed series (begun in Once a Soldier) with a page-turner tale of childhood friends reunited during the War of 1812. Lord Audley, Gordon to his friends, is hired by the British family of a widow, Callista Brooke, to find her and bring her home from Washington, D.C., the city at the center of the unrest. When he finds her, he realizes that the widow is his neighbor and friend from childhood, who had believed him dead. Gordon had tried to save Callie from an unwanted marriage to an older Jamaican planter by eloping with her to Scotland, but before they could wed, her father had him convicted of false crimes. As Gordon and Callie journey from Washington to Baltimore to retrieve her stepchildren, their friendship deepens and their desire grows, but they face imminent danger. As these two appealing characters discover how friendship can change into romance, Putney completes their story with plenty of detail and cameos from historical figures.

Fate separates best friends and neighbors Callistra and Gordon. Narrator Beverley Crick develops a sweet-voiced Callistra from early womanhood to her recent unexpected widowhood. Even dealing with her great loss, Calistra's voice continues to ring proud and clear. Now this strong woman who has been molded by so many challenges finds herself once again face to face with Gordon, who she thought was dead. Callistra immediately recognizes his unforgettable commanding voice, so well enunciated and tinged with a British accent. Putney spins their love story through dialogue, which Crick delivers in distinct voices. While the War of 1812 rages in the background, their speech remains the focus for listeners.
