The latest in a series of Gaiman short-story adaptations from Doran, Chivalry is a stunning example of how powerfully comics can enhance an already charming story. When an elderly British widow buys the Holy Grail from a thrift store, she has no idea that she'll find herself visited by the gallant Galahad, who seeks to trade whatever is necessary to finally obtain the Grail. In barely 70 pages, Gaiman and Doran build an entire world that the reader can feel, one that seems so close to reality that it might just, maybe, have existed. While Doran shares the long, intense process of deciding how to approach the art in the endnotes (well worth a read), the art style could be simply described as illuminated manuscript meets charming British graphic memoir. This will appeal to fans of the collaborators' other projects, like Troll Bridge (2016) and Snow, Glass, Apples (2019), but it will also be a strong pick for those with an interest in short fantasy and cozy stories, or anyone with an eye for lingering over a work of art.
